Cell Phone Tethering to Access the Internet

Now that Keller Williams has e-Edge, I wanted a way to connect the Wi-Fi modem on my laptop to the internet from anywhere – including a client’s kitchen table.

I think we all know by now that our laptops have a wireless modem that can access the internet from any unsecured ‘hotspot’ such as Starbucks, McDonalds, most hotels, and even Hooters!  But because none of these servers offer security, these are not the places for conducting business from your computer.

Checking the internet, it seems the most common choice is to buy a monthly Wi-Fi subscription from your cell phone provider that will turn your phone into a ‘hotspot’ for the wireless modem on your computer. Subscription costs run anywhere from $20-$50 a month. Terribly expensive!!

But I found a terrific alternative.  It’s called Easy Tether Lite . This software will let you access just about any internet site, including the MLS.  And for a one-time fee of only $9.99 you can buy the Pro version which will MC900439798access secure websites (https) –  e-Edge is a secured site since this is where we store all our contract files.

The great thing about this program is that it is not an ‘app’. It is a true internet connection from the Wi-Fi modem on your cell phone to your computer via a USB cord (the tether). So if you are already paying for an unlimited data plan on your cell phone (emails, texting, navigation, etc.) this is just one more thing that plan can do for you.

MC900048024It took me awhile to figure out how to install the program… I was trying to make it harder than it was. Basically, the program files are downloaded to the disk on your cell phone. Then you’ll need to transfer the files to your laptop. (Side note: I created a folder on my C drive called Easy Tether and moved the files from my phone’s disk drive to this folder.)

The main thing is, follow the directions that have been downloaded to your phone. After you’ve moved the files to a folder on your C drive, open the folder. You’ll see a sub-folder called “Download”. (How obvious is that!!)  Here you will see a ‘file type’ called ‘Windows Installer Package’. Click on that. Within minutes the program will be installing onto your laptop.

I bought the Pro version, one time cost of $9.99, so I would have access to secure sites. To test it, I turned off the wireless connection on my laptop, tethered my phone via my USB cord, and clicked ‘connect’ on the Easy Tether icon. Voila!!! I was on the internet….. able to access all my client files on e-Edge. How sweet is that!!

FYI:  If your USB cord is long and clumsy, I found a 12” USB cord on Tiger Direct for $8. http://www.tigerdirect.com/  Happy tethering!!
